MiniReminder   FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I want to have a backup copy of my reminders and preferences.  Where are they stored?
MiniReminder events and preferences are stored in the "minireminder.events" and "minireminder.prefs" files, respectively.  These files are located in the same folder where the program was installed (usually "C:\Program Files\MiniReminder\", or "C:\Users\<username>\MiniReminder\" in Windows Vista).

You can always click on the "Files" button within the "Edit Events" dialog to show where they are stored.

These are the files to backup.

I have bought a new computer, and I want to move MiniReminder there without losing any of my reminders and preferences.  What should I do?
MiniReminder uses, basically, the following files:

  • minireminder.events:  the events file.
  • minireminder.prefs:  the preferences file.
These files are located in the same folder where the program is installed (usually "C:\Program Files\MiniReminder\", or "C:\Users\<username>\MiniReminder\" in Windows Vista). You can always click on the "Files" button within the "Edit Events" dialog to show where they are stored.

You can copy them to a floppy disk or a USB key, and once you have installed MiniReminder on your new computer you can put the previously copied files into the corresponding folder on your new computer (replacing the default ones). That's it!

How to get the MiniReminder to self-calculate the years for birthdays?
Just write  "$Age{yyyy}"  (where "yyyy" is a year)  anywhere in the text of a warning message or note and it will be calculated automatically.

For example, the following warning message:
John's Birthday ($Age{1980} years old).
will be displayed as:
John's Birthday (28 years old).
assuming we are in 2008.

I wish the time-of-day could be inserted for events to sort the displayed items in the sequence of event times.  Is it possible?
Same day events are displayed alphabetically, so if you write the time at the beginning of each event they will be displayed in the correct sequence:
09:00 - Doctor Appointment
10:30 - Convention Planning
13:00 - Contractors Meeting
18:00 - Julie's dinner
21:00 - Blahblah
Just make sure you always use 24-hour format for the time, so it can be sorted alphabetically!

There is an small red exclamation in front of some events.  What does it mean?
The small red exclamation sign in front of an event means that you have set special warning limits for this event (instead of the default ones as set in 'Preferences').

How do I upgrade to a new version of MiniReminder?
To upgrade your version of MiniReminder, simply install the new version. The new version will cleanly replace the old version, and all your valuable events and preferences will automatically be preserved.

Is there a MiniReminder version for Linux?
Sorry, there is no specific version of MiniReminder for Linux, but some users have reported that the Windows version works great with Wine.

What languages does MiniReminder support?
MiniReminder is currently available in Catalan, English, Danish, Estonian, French, Italian, or Spanish. See this section.

How can I buy you a book in your Amazon's Wish List?
Although MiniReminder is absolutely free, if you use it regularly and are a satisfied user please consider buying me a book from my Amazon Wish List.

Just click "Add to Cart" on any book from my list, and then click on "Proceed to Checkout". You have to be an Amazon.com customer to pay for it. Just make sure you ship the book to me (Gift Address) and not to yourself!  :-)
